Are You Available?
‘…And from then on this disciple took her into his home’ John19:27b
Many have deliberated over why Jesus chose to commit His mother into Johns care. He had siblings, at least we know of two that were also used mightily by God – and Jude. Why not Peter, who was always so eager to run towards the Master? Others speculate that if He had entrusted Peter with His mother, Peter would have abandoned her and gone fishing. We cannot judge if there was a better option. However, the answer to this question is quoted in today’s scripture. V.25, John was the only one there; John was available. Of all the disciples that were in Jesus’ circle, it was only John that was there besides the four other women. Jesus will commit what is most precious to Him to those who are available; it is up to you and I to make sure we are available. Even now, Jesus is searching for people He can entrust the work that needs to be done for the Kingdom to. Are you available? You need to constantly test yourself to check your availability. For instance, the Church is looking to multiply life groups but Sunday evenings are premiership nights – FC vs. Jesus. Will you drop FC for Jesus and be available? Will you take what He entrusts you with into your home? It is easy to think we are available when in actual sense we just might not be. It helps to test, to be sure we really are. Jesus picked John for three reasons: (1) John was available. (2) John was tender; he was called the apostle of love, so Jesus could trust John. (3) John took care of his own mother; in fact she was right there with him. John demonstrated that he could take care of his own mother so Jesus could say ‘behold your mother’ and John went home with two mothers. It is the same thing with God; you have to be faithful in one before He adds to you. Jesus today is looking out for the Church and seeking people to trust with His bride. Will you be available?
Prayer: Lord Jesus, please open my eyes to see how I can be more available to You and the Kingdom. Teach me how to position myself in my devotion so that I will be available to You. Amen!

Wow…I never saw the story of Jesus handing his mother to the care of John in that way. This is real insight on what is essential in walking with God….availability. Its one thing to want to help and its another to be available to render help. This is really helpful and its free! Thank God and thank you! 😀
I totally agree with you Disun. For me it gives serving a whole new definition. Also points to the fact that the little things we easily want to do without matter to God and He uses them as training grounds for us. with David it was the sheep, with John it was his mother… hmmmm
