The Culture Box I

‘Don’t copy the behavior and customs of this world, but let God transform you into a new person by changing the way you think. Then you will learn to know God’s will for you, which is good and pleasing and perfect’ Rom.12:2

The second thing that attempts to box God in our lives is our culture. Culture is the summation of socially transmitted behavioral patterns and beliefs. Like tradition, culture is not necessarily bad but when the culture of the world does not align with the culture of the Kingdom then we experience a culture clash. We are in the world, so there are parts of the culture of the world that we would have to embrace. Such cultures are neither here nor there. The Jeans culture for instance; a lot of people wear Jeans. There is absolutely nothing wrong with wearing Jeans. However, there is something wrong with wearing Jeans drooped low to the knee. Folks don’t even know how it started. You cannot just adopt cultures without understanding their origin. Many people don’t even know why they are doing what they are doing. When there is a culture clash between the culture of the Kingdom and the culture of the world, you need to decide where you belong. If you belong to the Kingdom of God, then the culture of the Kingdom must prevail. For instance in the Kingdom we have a culture of moderation [Phil.4:5]. When you want to do things excessively there is a culture clash. In the Kingdom we have a culture of financial increase that clashes with the world’s culture. In the world, financial increase comes by saving; getting all you can, canning all you get and investing. In the Kingdom, however, it goes beyond saving and investing to sowing, tithing and giving. The world questions how one can give and increase. The Word says ‘Give freely and become more wealthy…’[Prov.11:24]. It is important for you to find out what God says concerning every issue. It is all in the God’s Word. ‘Don’t copy the behavior and customs of this world, but let God transform you into a new person by changing the way you think. Then you will learn to know God’s will for you, which is good and pleasing and perfectRom.12:2. Study the Word and live your life according to His will.

Prayer: Lord, as I commit to studying Your Word daily, open my eyes to the culture of the Kingdom. Lord I ask that You transform me into a new person by changing the way I think, in Jesus Name.
