Tehillah

‘But thou art holy, O thou that inhabitest the praises [tehillah] of Israel’ Ps.22:3 [KJV].

Tehillah is derived from the word halal. Tehillah means the singing of halal. It is putting all the halal into songs. It is to sing, to laud, and to make music in a way that is clamorously foolish, in a way that is boastful of God, in a way that is clear, in a way that is raving. It is also the hymns of the Spirit. Tehillah is the song of the Spirit. With the songs of the Spirit, the flesh looses its consciousness, you are praising and worshiping God and you are totally dead to yourself. Totally dead to what you look like, the make up you have on, the cloths you have on, the people around you. And you are alive to the Spirit of God; at this time the song of the Spirit becomes tehillah. God wants us to understand this, when you are all about Him and not about you in worship it is tehillah. ‘But thou art holy, O thou that inhabitest the praises [tehillah] of Israel’ Ps.22:3 [KJV]. The praises that God inhabits is the praises that has nothing to do with flesh, where you are released to the Spirit of God. It is the singing of halal. It is not just to put some songs together and say God dwells in the praises of His people. You have to tehillah. ‘Rejoice in the Lord, O ye righteous: for praise [tehillah] is comely for the upright’ Ps.33:1[KJV].  Look at it this way; God is saying tehillah befits the upright. Many people think this kind of praise is unbefitting for their status in the society but God is saying since you are His righteous child, tehillah is befitting – it fits you to rave like a mad man in the presence of God. It fits you to lift your hands and jump in His presence. A classic example of tehillah is when we have our thanksgiving services, we have brought our offerings to God, you hear the trumpet call, and everyone starts to jump. If you don’t understand it, you will think we are childish and crazy. Some people are even moved to carry the chairs they are sitting on. Why because tehillah looses its dignity before God. Next time when you hear the trumpet call, you know what to do before God.
