Your Seed

‘Children are a gift from the Lord; they are a reward from him. Children born to a young man are like arrows in a warrior’s hand’ Ps.127:3-4

A number of us are emotionally attached to people we are in relationships with. And when such people experience a loss we are moved with compassion for them. As such we want to lend a hand now and again to help make up for the emptiness they feel. However there are lengths that we must think carefully about before engaging. For example, a divorced or single woman who weighs her options and settles on having a child to fill the emptiness she is feeling, approaches a young man she is close to for a sperm donation.

Can you live with that? It’s like saying you want to sleep with her to have a child and there will be no strings attached. It just does not sound right to me. It’s a moral issue you have to wrestle with because it is not like donating blood or giving financial assistance, this is your seed. Your seed has spiritual implications on your heritage in God. Your seed carries your life [DNA] so you can’t just be distributing your seed. That’s why when God was talking to Abraham He said, ‘I will bless your seed’. It is so major spiritually that it should not be treated with levity. You can point her to a sperm bank. Even if the lady is married and has the backing of her husband, this does not make it less complicated in my opinion. I don’t know how a man can stomach that. It is difficult. But again people who are waiting on God for the fruit of the womb are under so much pressure that the average person has no clue of. My prayer for those that get married is that there will not be delays. My wife and I waited for eight years for a child. During those eight years it seemed like there were pregnant women everywhere. While there is tremendous pressure particularly from society that may excuse you donating your sperm to that couple yet the fact remains that you have to wrestle with ethical issues and spiritual implications that nothing is able to prepare you for. The three of you may be quiet on it but the same society will tell that child the truth about his/her birth.

Prayer: Father, in pouring out love to others help me not step out of line with You, in Jesus Name.
