Poor In Spirit
‘Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven’ Matt.5:3 [NIV].
Jesus wants you and I to know today that the resources of heaven are at the disposal of the poor in spirit. So what does it mean to be poor in spirit? Does it mean I am poor in spirit when my bank account is reflecting a double negative? Of course not! To be poor in spirit simply means to realize one’s desperate need for God. For you and I to be poor in spirit means realizing our desperate need for God. Therefore if you are in fellowship simply because you want recognition for the material things you possess it means you have not realized your desperate need for God yet and as such the resources of heaven will not be available to you yet. ‘Great blessings belong to those who know they are spiritually in need. God’s kingdom belongs to them’ Matt.5:3 [ERV]. So the absolute realization that without Him we are nothing makes the resources of heaven available to us. What a blessing! This is very different from thinking that I am something and with God I am more. Rather it is the sheer realization that without God I am absolutely nothing! There is one word that summarizes being poor in spirit and that word is humility! So God is saying blessed are the humble for they have the resources of heaven available to them.
Haven’t you noticed that in the kingdom of heaven those that are humble are the most powerful people? ‘Blessed (happy, to be envied, and spiritually prosperous—with life-joy and satisfaction in God’s favor and salvation, regardless of their outward conditions) are the poor in spirit (the humble, who rate themselves insignificant), for theirs is the kingdom of heaven!’ Matt.5:3 [AMP]. In other words, God is saying the humble is the person that rates himself insignificant. Do you go around thinking that if only people know what you earn they will treat you with a little more respect or seat you closer to the altar on Sundays? God is saying the humble are those that rate themselves as insignificant. Jesus is saying the resources of heaven are at the disposal of the humble.
Prayer [song]: Lord, I thirst for You I long to be in Your presence My soul will wait on You Father, draw me nearer Draw me nearer To the beauty of Your holiness. I will wait for You, Almighty God In the beauty of Your holiness… Amen!
