Experience Jesus

‘…And be sure of this: I am with you always, even to the end of the age’ Matt.28:20.

People usually have three reasons why they feel they cannot evangelize. The first reason is ‘I don’t know enough scripture’. The answer to that is what set the early church apart. It is not about the amount of scripture that you know but rather it is about the person of Jesus that you know. The people in the early church didn’t have Bibles like we do; they just had parchment of the Old Testament. Yet what set the early church apart was their experience of the person of Jesus. People were able to tell just by looking at Peter and the other disciples that they were not educated. But guess what, people were also able to tell that they had been with Jesus. Jesus asked, ‘who do you say that I am?’ That is the most important thing in evangelism. Who do you say that He is, who is Jesus to you? The second excuse people usually give is ‘I think I need to have an evangelistic personality because some Christians have an evangelistic personality’. That used to be a problem for me until Jesus set me free. There is nothing like an evangelistic personality. God is wise enough to make all of us different. God is wise enough not to make all of us the same. God has given you a temperament, a personality. He will use that temperament to reach people around you. He is not trying to make you into someone else. He is going to use that temperament. He is going to use you. The truth is that the only personality that must be present is Jesus. ‘…And be sure of this: I am with you always, even to the end of the age’ Matt.28:20. Jesus is saying go and evangelize and don’t worry I will be there. Isn’t that comforting? Regardless of our personalities, Jesus will be there so we really can’t go wrong with soul winning. We can’t make people fall in love with Jesus but we can set up a date. We can just introduce them to Jesus and leave Him to do the rest. That is so liberating. It is not your job or mine to save souls. Our responsibility is to point to Jesus and Jesus will take it from there. The third excuse people give is ‘it is too hard, I can’t do it’. True evangelism is to be tuned to and cooperate with the person of Jesus via the prompting of the Holy Spirit.
