Every Kind

Lu.12:15 “Then he said, “Beware! Guard against every kind of greed. Life is not measured by how much you own.” [with emphasis]

The second thing Jesus said about money is, do not be greedy. Greed has the power to consume our ability to be generous. Take note, the Bible says every kind of greed. When I saw this, I did some digging and I discovered at least seven kinds of greed. We will discuss four and your assignment is to research for others. Knowledge is light. Light is deliverance.

The first type of greed is Hoarding. This type preys on the diligent and prudent because they are susceptible to greed. Hoarders are insecure about the future. A hoarder will not respond to God’s instruction to give everything. The hoarder will typically say until you have given me an alternative, I cannot give what is in my hand. Hoarding cripples faith and relating with God cannot happen without faith. The willingness of the hoarder to trust money rather than God, drives him to ignore the needs around him.

The second type of greed is Overspending. This type preys on the impatient. The over spender confuses needs with wants. He looks at a ‘nice to have’ and says it is a ‘must have’. She takes something that is a want and convinces herself that it is a need, until she becomes broke. An over spender cannot have margin because overspending ruins margin. They get a financial windfall and their response is to go on a safari. And by the time they are done, they are back to level zero financially. And then they start all over again, waiting and praying for a break through. Then God does, but the over spender does all over again. No margin!

The third type of greed is Comparison. This kind of greed preys on the competitive. It drives people to spend and keep spending as a way to show off. They feel a compulsion to have everything their neighbor has even if it means being in debt and it is borne out of comparison. That is an express road to poverty.

The fourth type of greed is Entitlement. The sense that someone else owes you something –  do not believe this lie. Entitlement is a common trend that points to the spirit of poverty. Entitlement is the spirit of poverty and it will be far from you, in Jesus Name.

Prayer: Holy Spirit, please empower me to guard against every kind of greed. I will not measure my life by how much I own, in Jesus Name. Amen!
