The Promise

Gal.3:17 “This is what I am trying to say: The agreement God made with Abraham could not be cancelled 430 years later when God gave the law to Moses. God would be breaking his promise.”

The Old Covenant that expired at The Cross of Calvary was The Mosaic Covenant, not the Abrahamic Covenant. We need to get this because a lot of well-meaning Christians miss it. They think that the Church has come to replace Israel. No! The Church has come to provoke Israel to jealousy, that is  what the Bible says. The Church has come to be engrafted into what Israel took for granted. Through Christ, through The Cross of Jesus we have been brought into the Abrahamic Covenant. While the Mosaic Covenant did not continue with the Church beyond The Cross, the Abrahamic Covenant continued after The Cross.

We are children of Abraham, part of the common wealth of Israel. We are spiritual Jews. You should be totally excited about that. “This is what I am trying to say: The agreement God made with Abraham could not be cancelled 430 years later when God gave the law to Moses. God would be breaking his promise.” So, The Law of Moses could not have replaced The Covenant of Abraham. The Covenant of Abraham still exists; it is an eternal covenant. Four hundred and thirty years cannot erode what God has made eternal.

Even though we are not under The Law, The Law actually shows us God’s heart on a lot of issues. How God organized the nation of Israel shows us God’s heart on a lot of issues. While we are not to live strictly by those codes, we should have a glimpse (like a shadow) of the substance of this. If God was a jealous God in the Old Testament, God is still a jealous God today. He is the Lord, He changeth not! He is the same yesterday, today and forever. We are the ones that change. If God is a Holy God in the Old Testament, God is still a holy God – grace will not change that.

If in the Old Testament, God’s heart was for all needs to be supplied. God still wants all needs supplied today. If it is was God’s heart that nobody should lack, it is still His heart that nobody should lack. Deut.15:4There should be no poor among you, for the Lord your God will greatly (not sparingly) bless you in the land he is giving you as a special possession.” (emphasis added). The Voice translation puts it this way, “However, ideally, there shouldn’t be any poor people among you…” (emphasis added). When God says “ideally”, it means this can be negated.

Prayer (song): All Your promises are yeah and amen. You’re not a man You never lie. Jesus, You love me too much (Oh), Too much (Oh), Too much (Oh) – Excess love (Oh). Amen!
