Do This Daily

Romans 8:12-14 “So don’t you see that we don’t owe this old do-it-yourself life one red cent. There’s nothing in it for us, nothing at all. The best thing to do is give it a decent burial and get on with your new life. God’s Spirit beckons. There are things to do and places to go!” (MSG)

The first mental habit that demolishes the first weapon of self-destruction shame is, Remind Yourself Daily What Jesus Did For You. The second mental habit that demolishes the second weapon of self-destruction uncontrolled thoughts is Ask The Holy Spirit To Give You Superior Thoughts. The third mental habit that demolishes the third weapon of self-destruction compulsion is Realize That You Have the Ability to Say No. You can actually say no. I have heard people say, ‘This is a natural desire, so why should I question it or say no?’ Listen, it is not everything that comes naturally to you that you should do.

For instance, some people have a natural desire to punch people in the face. Does that mean they should go around punching people in the face? Paul says in 1 Corinthians 6:12 “You say, “I am allowed to do anything”—but not everything is good for you. And even though “I am allowed to do anything,” I must not become a slave to anything.” Someone once asked me what the difference was between Lagos traffic and Lekki traffic. I have heard that Lagos traffic is bad but now you are saying Lekki traffic. I said it is like COVID-19; Lekki traffic is the resistant variant. Now imagine being in Lekki traffic and the way some people drive makes you just want to curse them out. So, the question is should you do it because you want to? Definitely not! If you just do what you want, what comes naturally to you, many people will not go to work on Monday mornings.

Romans 8:9 “But you are not controlled by your sinful nature. You are controlled by the SPIRIT if you have the SPIRIT of God living in you. (And remember that those who do not have the Spirit of Christ living in them do not belong to him at all.)” (emphasis added).  If the Holy Spirit lives in you, you are controlled by Him, or at least you should be. Therefore, you should release your members to Him. Romans 8:12 “So, dear brothers, you have no obligations whatever to your old sinful nature to do what it begs you to do.” (LB, emphasis added).

We have learnt that the old sinful nature stays with us until we see Jesus. So, we are to keep feeding our new nature, so that it keeps getting victory. However, we have no obligation to that old sinful nature, none whatsoever. It can starve to death if it so desires. You do not have to feed it or take care of it. The old nature will beg you to do things, but you have no obligation to it. You get all of God when you give your life to Christ. But the question is, does God have all of you?

Prayer: Father, help me to daily remember what Jesus has done for me. By Your Spirit give me superior thoughts and empower me to feed my spirit man daily, in Jesus Name. Amen!
