Matter Of Fact
Psalm 100:1-3 “Earth, sing to the Lord! Be happy as you serve the Lord! Come before him with happy songs! Know that the Lord is God. He made us, and we belong to him. We are his people, the sheep he takes care of.” (ERV).
Beginning today, we are going to wrestle with a couple of scriptures. We need to wrestle with the scriptures. Since I got saved, some of these scriptures have been a major point of wrestling for me. The first is Luke 17:7-10 “When a servant comes in from plowing or taking care of sheep, does his master say, ‘Come in and eat with me’? No, he says, ‘Prepare my meal, put on your apron, and serve me while I eat. Then you can eat later.’ And does the master thank the servant for doing what he was told to do? Of course not. In the same way, when you obey me you should say, ‘We are unworthy servants who have simply done our duty.'” (emphasis added). This passage is popularly known as the Parable of the unprofitable servant.
Everyone that will understand God and walk with God would know that as much as we are children, we are also servants. Yes, we are sons, but the Bible says the son serves his father. So, there is a component of our relationship with God that demands serving God. If all you want to do is to relate with God as a baby, crying all the time. You are not going to go very far. You need to grow up and become a son and begin to serve your Father. And when you do that you are not entitled to anything. Different organizations have different ways of appreciating their people. In God’s Favourite House, we choose one worker to represent all the workers each month who wins the award of the worker of the month. It is fantastic.
However, it is possible that maybe one or two people have been saying after all I do in this church, they still have not awarded me the worker of the month. That is an entitlement spirit. Luke 17:10 “So likewise you, when you have done all those things which you are commanded, say, ‘We are unprofitable servants. We have done what was our duty to do.’” (NKJV, emphasis added). This is the position you take. The Voice Translation puts it this way, “Now apply this situation to yourselves. When you’ve done everything I’m telling you to do, just say, “We’re servants, unworthy of extra consideration or thanks; we’re just doing our duty.” (emphasis added)
Instead, people say, ‘Lord, I am done, now I am worthy of extra consideration, commendation and thanks.’ And if the Lord does not bring extra consideration, commendation, and thanks, they feel unappreciated. A survey of why some Christians ‘burnout’ or drop by the wayside states that many of them feel unappreciated by God. God says you are just doing your duty.
Prayer: Father, I thank You because it is indeed a privilege to serve You in any capacity. Thank You for choosing me out of the innumerable options You have, in Jesus Mighty Name. Amen!
