Unhealthy Relationships

‘Don’t be fooled by those who say such things, for bad company corrupts good character’ 1Cor.15:33.

‘Don’t fool yourselves. Bad friends will destroy you’ 1Cor.15:33 [CEV]. It is interesting that God is emphasizing to us the aspect of deception as relates to unhealthy relationships. In other words, we can easily be deceived into believing that we can hang out with the wrong group of people and still remain who God wants us to be. And even still achieve what God wants us to achieve. The Bible says ‘Don’t fool yourselves’. If you hang out long enough with the wrong set of people you will be corrupted. Most people tend to think that they are strong enough to hang out with corrupt friends and stay the same. This is the greatest deception ever and it is so powerful that a lot of people are in its clutches. Perhaps the first time you hung out with them nothing happened. And you are still able to be who you are supposed to be. God is saying, if you hang out long enough, they will change you. Their bad company will corrupt your good character faster than you can imagine. Watch who you hang out with. ‘Show me your friends and I will tell you who you are’. Many of us must have heard this saying a lot when we were young. This saying still holds true today because we become what we behold. Don’t be deceived into thinking that you can have an unhealthy relationship and remain unaffected. In fact one of the greatest threats to fulfilling your destiny is the unhealthy relationship you are keeping. The people you have surrounded yourself with will determine where you will end. You do not need to be a prophet to know that the people you surround yourself with will eventually become who you are. You might have entered into the unhealthy relationship with the purpose of influencing them. There is a strategy for influencing them and it is not to hang out perpetually with them. We cannot be wiser than God, particularly when the relationship is unhealthy. One of the greatest challenges to the fulfillment of destiny is the company kept.

Prayer: Father, I ask for direction with the company I keep. Keep me from evil and keep evil far away from me. Lord I ask that You hand-pick my friends, in Jesus Name
