Remember
Deuteronomy 7:9 “So know that the Lord your God is God, the faithful God. He will keep his agreement of love for a thousand lifetimes for people who love him and obey his commands”. (NCV).
We see from Exodus 19:1-12 (please read) that the people came to a physical mountain. But in our case, we come to a spiritual mountain (Hebrews 12:18-24, please read). However, there are a few things we can learn by looking at their model. In fact, theirs is a shadow of things to come, so we can draw some lessons from their experience as we press into God and all that He has for us this season. There are five things that we can learn from Exodus 19. Are you ready?
#1. LOOK BACK – Remember God’s FAITHFULNESS. God wants us to look back and remember His faithfulness. Exodus 19:4 “‘You have seen what I did to the Egyptians. You know how I carried you on eagles’ wings and brought you to myself.” God is saying, remember what I did, look back. Sometimes, we think looking back is all wrong. However, if it is to look back at God’s faithfulness, then it is alright. God says, remember how I carried you on eagle’s wings. The picture painted here is that of a baby eagle learning to fly. And the process starts with the mother eagle pushing the eaglet out of the nest. Sometimes, we look at our lives and it is as if God has pushed us out of the nest. While we are in free fall, we are trying to flap our wings.
If the eaglet is unable to fly by itself, what happens is the mother eagle comes underneath the eaglet and picks it up, saving it from falling. You are not going to crash. But guess what? The mother eagle takes the eaglet back up and releases it again and again until the eaglet learns to fly. That is where Exodus 19:4 starts from and God is saying, remember! Lamentations 3:22-23 “The steadfast love of the Lord never ceases, his mercies never come to an end; they are new every morning; great is your faithfulness.” (NRSV). Did you think you ran out of God’s mercy yesterday? Guess what? You have a fresh dose of mercy for today. Do you think because of how much God did for you yesterday, therefore God’s faithfulness has expired?
Have you heard people say, ‘God did so much for me yesterday; if He does not do anything for me again, I am totally grateful’? God has fresh faithfulness for you today. God is not only faithful at running and controlling the universe. He is faithful in my life and in yours. God is faithful in the minute details of our lives. Deuteronomy 7:9 “Know this: God, your God, is God indeed, a God you can depend upon. He keeps his covenant of loyal love with those who love him and observe his commandments for a thousand generations.” (MSG).
Prayer (hymn): The steadfast love of the Lord never ceases. His mercies never come to an end. They are new every morning, new every morning. Great is Thy faithfulness, O Lord… Amen!
