In some cases, the next step might be to can the relationship. To can simply means to restrict influence or access. So after you have confronted the person and you have discerned that the relationship cannot continue on the level that it operated previously. For instance, when you confront someone with their manipulations, the next step would be to restrict their access. That is if it is a relationship you cannot do without. You need to can the influence of that relationship because it is toxic. If you cannot get clarity in your spirit about the person, then you to need can the person’s access. There are some relationships that you have to cut-off immediately to avoid prolonged conflict [Gen.13:5-9]. ‘…Take your choice of any section of the land you want, and we will separate…’ Gen.13:9. ‘Don’t be fooled by those who say such things, for bad company corrupts good character’ 1Cor.15:33. Such relationships are like a cancer; if you do not cut it off it will spread and infect other areas of your life and might lead to a major loss. For example, you had a relationship with a lady friend before you got married. And now you are married but you keep communicating with that lady friend. That is an unhealthy baggage that you need to cut off dispassionately. If you still are excusing it then something is wrong with you. Cut off that communication line immediately. Particularly if you had been emotionally involved with that person, you need to cut-off. Some of these connections become like a leach to an animal; slow and steady killers. Can the access they have and move ahead to cut-off immediately. What are the relationships in your life, you need to filter the connections. Discern whether you need to confront, can, or cut-off where necessary. Who do you need to confront? Which relationships do you need to can? And which relationships do you need to cut-off?
