Some people’s reaction to other people’s pain is what is the big deal? Listen you do not need to know what it is physically to have nothing for you to be merciful to those who are going through the pain of having nothing. And by God’s grace there is no time in your life that you will experience having nothing. For many of us, all you are required to do in showing mercy is to listen to that person you are in a relationship with. Let them share their burden with you. Get of your high horse and lend your ears because the Word of God says blessed are the merciful because they will obtain mercy. Jesus himself had to come down and become a man so that he can feel our pain. ‘Since he himself has gone through suffering and testing, he is able to help us when we are being tested’ Heb.2:18. You cannot succeed very much in intercession if you do not know how to make another person’s burden your own. If you want to pity people then you cannot succeed in praying for them. In fact, there are times in intercession when the pain of the person you are praying for is transferred to you. And when you break through in the place of prayer, that person is also set free. The more you stay with God, the more God rubs off on you. Let God’s mercy rub off on you. It is your choice whether to embrace people’s pain and help them through it or abandon them to their own plight. It may not be a physical transference of the burden but sometimes you find that the Holy Spirit allows you to feel the emotional burden of the person you are interceding for. A lot of people are quick to write off single mothers. My question is, do you know what it is to be a single mother? May you never become a single mother. But you don’t need to experience being a single mother before you are merciful to single mothers. Granted you do not know the full extent of the next person’s pain but that does not stop you from being merciful and lending yourself to them in the full extent of mercy just like your heavenly Father.

Prayer: Father, on my own I don’t know how to be merciful.
