What is clay? Clay is worthless dust. God says to Israel that as the clay is in the hands of the potter so Israel [which is us] is in His hands. There are two forces at play in pottery making. The first is the intent of the potter [his desire or what he intends to create]. And the second thing is the readiness of the clay. Every potter in the creativity of His mind knows what He wants to make out of the clay that is before him. If you speak to a potter, he can give you a perfect picture of what he can see from the clay that is before him. That is how God who is the Potter is in this story and in reality. God knows what He wants to make of you. He has a finished picture [image] of who you are. It doesn’t matter what you look like right now, know this, God makes beautiful things out of worthless dust. Look at the people around you and appreciate how beautiful they are. God made each one of them out of dust. God knows that you may not be as you should be but He has a perfect image for you. He says in His Word that He alone knows the thoughts He has towards you. They are thoughts of good, to give you a hope, to give you a future, to make you beautiful, and to perfect all that concerns you. The potter always sees the finished work.

The second aspect is the readiness of the clay. Have you ever seen clay negotiating with the potter? Have you ever seen the potter ask for permission from the clay just to touch it? Have you ever heard the potter tell the clay first what he wants to make out of it and then they both proceed to negotiate? So why do we human beings often think we can question God’s plans and purposes for our lives? Why is it that when things are not going in line with what we have imagined, we get upset and throw tantrums and even threaten God? That is when you hear people say things like, ‘If this does not happen, I will never never, ever go to church again’. You must remain conscious of the fact that you are nothing but worthless dust. Yet it is the perfect picture and good intentions of the Potter that gives you value.

Prayer: Father, I thank You for elevating me and I ask for the wisdom to remain small in my own eyes especially before You, in Jesus Name.

‘Then the Lord gave me this message: “O Israel, can I not do to you as this potter has done to his clay?
