David had a loyal heart. David also had loyal men added to him. One of such men was Eleazer the son of Dodo. At some point Israel was in a battle so fierce and the Philistines so powerful that the whole battalion of Israel ran away leaving only David and Eleazer. And David and Eleazer stood back to back. Eleazer son of Dodo killed eight hundred men with his sword. By the time they finished fighting, his hand was stuck to the sword. The Bible says they had to remove his hands from the sword. I am praying today, in the midst of battle may you have people that will stand back to back with you. These were men of war. David expressed his longing for the waters of Bethlehem and these men got up, fought through the armies of the philistines to and fro to get water, just three men. David said ‘“This water is as precious…’ and he offered it to God. See David’s heart on display. Who thinks like this? It is so powerful. David remained loyal.

David was made the king of Judah and Ishbosheth; Saul’s son, was made king over Israel with Abner, Saul’s commander behind him. As long as Abner was there David and his men were unable to penetrate the territories under Ishbosheth. So David was the king of Judah and Ishboshethwas the king of Israel and Abner maintained that status quo. But Ishboshethmade a mistake. Be careful about just listening to rumors and making up your mind. Ishboshethheard rumors that Abner was sleeping with one of Saul’s concubines and he challenged Abner. This made Abner furious and that was how Abner decamped to David’s side and swore to establish David’s throne over the United kingdom of Israel. Read 2 Samuel 3. The mistake that your enemy must make, that person they must offend that will deliver them up into your hands, let them begin to make that mistake now. Joab heard about Abner’s move, set up a plot and killed him. Why? Abner had killed his brother; if Abner comes back as part of the United Kingdom, he will be a general over Joab; and Joab’s position was threatened. David mourned Abner. That is why if you read about the mighty men of David, Joab’s name is not there.
