Be humble, thinking of others as better than yourselves”. Relating with another person as better than yourself does not mean that you are not important. What the Scripture is saying is to just think of the other person as the more important one.

If you are the man or the woman, treat your wife or husband as more important than yourself. Meaning if there is only piece of meat left in the soup when you get home and you are the first to arrive, you leave it for the other person.

Men, if you can do that for your wife, she will bless you and you will be greatly rewarded. I am not saying that should be your objective for leaving the piece of meat for her. If you are the wife do not eat it to teach him to give you more money. God says “consider the other person as better than yourself”.

Your relationships are not a transaction. It is not “scratch my back – I scratch your back” as it is popularly said. It is good to do things for each other but you are doing the things you do because that is what God requires you to do. So it has nothing to do with what the other person does or does not do.

While preaching, a pastor noticed that a certain couple that normally would sit with their arms around each other in church had a seat in between them. As God would have it, the pastor was preaching about 1Cor.13:4 “Love is patient and kind. Love is not jealous or boastful or proud”. God worked on their hearts and by the time the pastor looked up there was no space between them any more. They were holding each other again. The question is who moved? Was it the man or was it the woman? The key thing is, it does not matter who moved; what matters is the space between them is gone.

Prayer: Father, help me not to be selfish but rather be humble and think of others as better than myself.
