What Will Jesus Do?
‘For I hate divorce!” says the LORD, the God of Israel. “To divorce your wife is to overwhelm her with cruelty, ” says the LORD of Heaven’s Armies. “So guard your heart; do not be unfaithful to your wife’ Mal.2:16.
It will surprise you that one question I get consistently is under what condition can I divorce my spouse? I don’t just get this question from men; even women want to know if they can divorce their husbands. And when I get this question, I just ask myself what will Jesus do? ‘Some Pharisees came and tried to trap him with this question: “Should a man be allowed to divorce his wife for just any reason?’ Matt.19:3. So today I am presenting you with the same answer that Jesus gave. ‘Haven’t you read the Scriptures?” Jesus replied. “They record that from the beginning ‘God made them male and female’ Matt.19:4. [Please Read Matt.19:5-9]. After hearing this, the disciples concluded that it was better not to marry. It’s amazing how single people always want to get married. If you really know what it means to be married, I’m not saying you won’t get married but you will approach it with somberness. Solomon said ‘It’s better to live alone in the corner of an attic than with a quarrelsome wife in a lovely home’ Prov.21:9. Yet Jesus says troublesome or not you cannot send her away! Once you are married, you are married! When it comes to issues like this you need to understand God’s heart. God hates divorce and as a child of God that should be important to you. Sadly, I meet Christians who don’t care about God or about their children. All they care about is their own happiness. Where is God in all this and have you thought about your commitment to your children? Your divorce will scar them for life. Yet you are willing to risk all that because your spouse is not dancing to your tune. ‘For I hate divorce!” says the LORD, the God of Israel. These are very strong words God used to express His disposition towards divorce. Some people are quick to say Jesus says ‘unless his wife has been unfaithful.’ But have you explored forgiveness? Sadly some people are now just setting traps for their spouse to catch them in acts of unfaithfulness. He is the God of all flesh and there is nothing too hard for Him to do. Get it right from the start and resolve to forgive no matter what.
Prayer: Lord Jesus, please heal my marriage of any hurt that has made its habitation in our hearts. Lord teach us forgiveness, in Jesus Name.
