Tongues

‘And everyone present was filled with the Holy Spirit and began speaking in other languages, as the Holy Spirit gave them this ability’ Acts 2:4

During our question and answer series a number of life changing questions were put forward. We turned to scripture for answers because ‘all Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness so that the servant of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work’ 2 Tim.3:16-17 [NIV]. Someone wanted to know if writing in tongues had scriptural backing. She had a friend who writes in tongues and she was finding it a bit confusing. Have you seen behavioral patterns that you also wonder if they are scriptural? Your best bet is to prayerfully check through scripture and speak to the Holy Spirit about it. The truth is there is nothing in the scriptures that talks about writing in tongues. I do not write in tongues and I think it is a strange behavior except prompted by God. The Holy Spirit can prompt you to do things that are not in the scripture and that have not been seen prior to that time. The Holy Spirit will not tell you to do anything that is sinful in any way or that does not have its roots in the Word. If the Holy Spirit prompts you to do anything then please by all means follow His leading but you cannot turn it into a doctrine. This is consistent with a lot of leaders today, the Holy Spirit leads them into an experience and they turn it into a doctrine for all of us. It is your experience with God and not a doctrine. A doctrine is scriptural. Writing in tongues is not a doctrine; you don’t have to write in tongues except the Holy Spirit prompts you directly. For instance, while a minister is ministering to people, he gets to a particular case and the Holy Spirit tells him to lay his leg on that person and the person receives instant healing. That was a leading of the Holy Spirit, an instant prophetic solution to the case in point. You cannot then make this a doctrine and begin to lay your leg on everyone. It is possible for the Holy Spirit to place you around certain people with certain gifts or experiences because He wants to birth certain things in you but follow Him and Him alone.

Prayer: Holy Spirit, I defer to You as my teacher and guide in my walk with God. Help me to follow You and not the doctrines of men, in Jesus Name.
