You Have Control!

‘And now, dear brothers and sisters, one final thing. Fix your thoughts on what is true, and honorable, and right, and pure, and lovely, and admirable. Think about things that are excellent and worthy of praise’ Phil.4:8

There is a battle going on in our minds, the age-old battle between God and evil. Young men and woman find their minds going off on a tangent based on what their eyes have seen. Yet God is saying to us today that you can control your mind. In fact, the quoted translation says ‘fix your thoughts’. The only way to survive in our present day world is to exercise your God given control over your mind. ‘Finally, my brethren, whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things are honest, whatsoever things are just, whatsoever things are pure, whatsoever things are lovely, whatsoever things are of good report; if there be any virtue, and if there be any praise, think on these thingsPhil.4:8 [KJV]. Again, your thoughts are like a compass they find the north and the true north is what has been dominant in your mind before that time. Yet it is one thing for a bird to fly over your head and it’s another thing for it to actually land and nest on your head. So you may not be able to stop the thoughts from flashing through your mind but you certainly have the power to deal with it. Do not spend time trying to fight the thoughts because guess what you are still focused on that thought. Instead rebuke the thought and then fix your mind on something else immediately, take your pick from what is pure, just, of good report, lovely, and of virtue. If you just gave your life to Christ, then what you have to do is immerse yourself in Him. The filth from your past cannot just disappear; the mind spent years thinking in that direction; which is why the Bible advises us to renew our minds with the Word of God. ‘…and we take captive every thought to make it obedient to Christ’ 2Cor.10:5 [NIV]. You need to build your defenses. You cannot expect to have pure thoughts at your fingertips on Friday, for instance, except you have spent your entire week with God. Otherwise it will be a struggle. So surround yourself with the Word of God – spend dedicated time reading the Bible, invest in audio sermons, and music with Christian lyrics. So when the temptation comes you will overpower it, in Jesus Name.

Prayer: I decree in the Name of Jesus that my mind shall focus on things that are pure, honest, just, lovely, things of good report, of virtue, praise, in Jesus Name.
