Consider This I
‘Then he took his staff in his hand, chose five smooth stones from the stream, put them in the pouch of his shepherd’s bag and, with his sling in his hand, approached the Philistine’ 1 Sam.17:40 [NIV]
There are a few interesting things that I want to bring to your attention. Firstly, Saul gave David his own armor. But after trying them on, David knew that this was not going to work for him so he took it off because he had not proved them. Then David looked at goliath and deployed innovative thinking. If you remember in the story, David said to Saul, the Lion came and I killed it. I held it by the beard and killed him. David had close combat with the loin. Then bear came, carried one of the lambs. I look the lamb from the bear and punched it to death. Close combat. But with goliath, David changed his strategy. He decided he was not going close to goliath. David decided to fire a missile – innovation! I am praying that God will show you the weapon that you need to deploy for the goliath before you to fall. And they will fall in the mighty Name of Jesus.
Secondly, David picked five smooth stones. Some analysts have said David picked five smooth stones because David didn’t have faith. If David had faith, all he needed to do was to pick one stone. And I laugh because if you don’t have faith you don’t fight that kind of a battle. If you don’t have faith as a David, you will not enter the ring with goliath. So it is not a faith issue. Some scholars said that the remaining four stones were for the four other brothers of goliath. Well Scripture said that goliath had brothers but Scripture didn’t specify how many brothers he had. And who says goliath’s brothers will be killed with stones because they chased after them with the sword. So why five smooth stones? Two reasons. The number one reason is planning. When you are planning, plan big and not small. When you are focusing, you can narrow your focus but when you are planning plan big. Christians need to understand that. It does not mean you do not have faith. It actually means you have faith because you are saying, if I miss with the first stone, the second stone will not miss the mark. And that is faith! The second reason is a spiritual reason from Scripture; I think that David chose five stones because five is the number for grace. Five is the number for mercy. David knew that it’s not by power, it’s not my might but by My Spirit says the Lord. Except the Lord builds, they labor in vain that build.
Prayer [song]: Its not my power, its not by might, but by My Spirit say the Lord. This mountain [visualize the mountain/goliath before you] shall be removed (3x), by My Spirit says the Lord. Amen!
