Come Now
Heb.4:16 “So let us come boldly to the throne of our gracious God. There we will receive his mercy, and we will find grace to help us when we need it most”
For many of us, our walk with God started with seeking Him because of a need. And on that journey, we discovered that not only is He all that we need, God is all that we want. A classic example is someone seeking God for the blessing of children. God uses that need to draw the person in and then He more than satisfies that longing. By the time that woman or that family has their triplets [say amen], they have fallen in love with God.
Peter had toiled all day but he did not catch any fish. Jesus showed up and gave him a huge financial breakthrough. The Bible says that Peter left all the fish and followed Jesus. Does that even make any sense? The truth is that if you stay with the fish, the fish will eventually finish. Peter must have thought that since this Jesus knows how to bring the fish, it is best to stick with Him. Sadly, many of us do not get it, so we do not surrender to God on time.
A lot of parents can attest to seasons where you do everything for your child and then one day they tell you to back off, “I can do it by myself”. The same child you have bathed and dressed since birth is now holding on to his towel at bath time and chasing you out of his room. For me, it was my grandmother and when I said “back off”, she had a good laugh and she left me. So I was now all alone in the shower, with no skill at handling the soap and soap got into one eye. I suppressed the desire to call for help and in my effort to get the soap out, soap got into the other eye. In my search for water, I dropped the soap and somehow managed to step on the soap. And just before I landed on the bathroom floor, I shouted for help and she rescued me.
Shouldn’t I have shouted when soap entered one eye or when it was in both eyes? But I waited till I was falling before crying out for help. We often allow things to get really bad before we cry to God for help. But God is saying come now, so that you can move forward.
Prayer [Hymn]: Nearer, my God, to thee, Nearer to thee! E’en though it be a cross that raiseth me. Still all my song shall be, Nearer, my God, to thee, Nearer to thee! Amen!
