How It Works

Luke 6:38 “Give, and you will receive. Your gift will return to you in full—pressed down, shaken together to make room for more, running over, and poured into your lap. The amount you give will determine the amount you get back.” [with emphasis]

Amazingly, Jesus spoke more about money than He spoke about love. The first time I heard this statement, it did not sit well with me. I had to do my own research and I discovered that the statement was true. Jesus spoke more about money than He spoke about faith, than He spoke about holiness, than He spoke about Heaven and earth combined. It is safe to say that this thing called money must be really important. I think one of the reasons money is so important is because of the things Jesus says. For example Jesus says in Matt.6:21Wherever your treasure is, there the desires of your heart will also be...” Your cheque book stubs can tell me the direction where you are going to spend eternity.

So Jesus had a lot to say about money. In fact, eleven out of Jesus’ thirty-two parables were about money. We will spend some time looking at the three things Jesus said about money.

The first thing Jesus said about money is, it is more blessed to give than to receive. Acts 20:35 “And I have been a constant example of how you can help those in need by working hard. You should remember the words of the Lord Jesus: ‘It is more blessed to give than to receive.’”[with emphasis].

Let me illustrate: Mr. A has two hundred thousand and Mr. B has zero. Out of the goodness of his heart, Mr. A decides to give Mr. B fifty thousand. Mathematics and economics teach us that Mr. B has increased by fifty thousand and Mr. A has decreased by fifty thousand. But Jesus says the mathematics is wrong. Yes Mr. B has increased by fifty thousand but Mr. A has also increased by much more than fifty thousand. The hand that gives never goes dry. The reason the enemy wants you to be stingy is because he wants you to be poor.

You have to develop a giving mentality. As a church, by the grace of God we give to different things – building schools, other churches, etc. And the reason is that is who we are. We deliberately decide to be generous. You cannot fast and pray into financial abundance. It does not work that way. You have to give your way into financial abundance.

Prayer: Holy Spirit, empower me to store up my treasure in Heaven, in Jesus Name. Amen!
