Why Worry?

Matt.6:²⁷ “Who of you by worrying can add a single hour to his life?”

Jesus says we are not to worry about our finances because worrying is unhelpful. How many people have been able to pay their children’s school fees by worrying? The truth is that your worrying does not count for anything because it is totally unhelpful. An anonymous writer says, “Worrying is stewing without doing”. I once counseled a lady that had a lot of worries. By God’s grace I was able to calm her down and diffuse all her worries and she was really happy. On her way out of my office she said, “Pastor, now that I no longer have worries, what will I be doing?” Worrying had become her pet and she felt like I had just taken her pet away. And I said, “There are so many things to do; read your Bible and worship Jesus”.

Stop worrying because it is unreasonable, it is unhealthy, it is unhelpful, and it is unnecessary. Matt.6:³⁰ “If that is how God clothes the grass of the field, which is here today and tomorrow is thrown into the fire, will He not much more clothe you, O you of little faith?” You and I need to give God some credit. When a child brings back a school fees teller from school, the child just gives it to his or her parents and goes to play. A child will not spend one second worrying about where the parents get the money. Children do not really care.

God has assumed the parental responsibility for your life, so just drop the bill and go. This is the secret to my living worry free. Every time worry attempts to creep in, I simply take the issue to God because it is totally unnecessary. All fear, worry, and anxiety come from a misunderstanding of who God is. 1 John 4:¹⁸ “Such love has no fear, because perfect love expels all fear. If we are afraid, it is for fear of punishment, and this shows that we have not fully experienced his perfect love.” God is your Father. I pray everyone reading this today has been able to trust God with his or her eternity. Meaning, you have no doubt that you are going to spend eternity with Jesus. It is crazy to trust God with your eternity and not trust Him with your finances.
