The Heart
Col.3:23 “Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for men.” [with emphasis]
Whatever you do, including your job, work at it with all your heart as though you are working for the Lord and not for men. Even if your boss is an unbeliever or you are not paid well, you are to put in your best; it is unto God. No matter who you are, where you work or what you do, you can work for God. The fact is that your primary service is to God and that makes every job meaningful and significant.
Your primary service is to God and that changes everything. When I was in paid employment, understanding that my work is unto God changed everything. A lot of people claim not to have found the job that fits their status. The truth is that there is dignity in labour and in every labour you can serve God. When you serve God, God can promote you to that job that you think is dignifying. But you have to start from where you are and start with what you have.
The second step to having a proper perspective is to work like the Lord. Working like the Lord requires us to have the same spirit, the same attitude, the same demeanour, and the same position as the Lord. So, what was Jesus’ attitude? Mark 10:45 “The Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve … “ [with emphasis]. Jesus’s attitude was a servant’s attitude. Jesus focused entirely on the needs of others. So, having the right perspective will mean focusing on the needs of others and that is contrary to how the world operates. The world suggests that it is a jungle out there – so it is dog eat dog and, people thrive by backstabbing to get ahead at the expense of others.
However, when we work like the Lord, God says you will get ahead because your promotion is from heaven. By definition, a servant’s attitude is becoming excited about making other people succeed. I know that people will struggle with this because they think that every other person will get ahead of them. Just try it and watch God promote you.
Prayer [song]: A heart like yours is my desire. A heart like yours is what I am searching for. Full of compassion, nothing wrong within; please hear me Lord, give me a heart like yours.
