Real Reason
John 3:16 “For God expressed His love for the world in this way: He gave His only Son so that whoever believes in Him will not face everlasting destruction, but will have everlasting life.” (The Voice)
Jesus is the express image of the invisible God. Colossians 1:15 “[Now] He is the exact likeness of the unseen God [the visible representation of the invisible]; He is the Firstborn of all creation.” (AMPC).What God was saying is that Jesus came out of Him.
Son means he came out of me. In giving us His only Son, what God was saying is this is me, this is the best that I can offer. What God has done for us is that He has given us all of God wrapped up in a Person at Christmas. Now imagine this with me; Jesus was born, and He was the birthday boy. They brought gifts to Him and rightfully so. They bowed and they celebrated Him and rightfully so.
But guess what? God took Jesus, wrapped Him as a gift, and He is offering the gift of Jesus to us His bride. Remember our story from yesterday? When the man was pursuing the lady and offering her the gift, who was the reason for that season? Was it the gift or was it the lady? The object of pursuit is the reason for the chase. The object of pursuit is the real reason for the celebration. Jesus being wrapped up and offered to you and I, His bride. Therefore, who is the real reason for the season? We are the real reason for the season. When they say the reason for the season is Jesus. Tell them, yes, but the real reason for the season is us.
God is offering us this gift, the gift of Jesus Christ. So, while everybody is celebrating Christmas, the real package (gift), Jesus, sometimes is not received. And God is offering the gift of Jesus so that the real reason for the season, which is you and I, can be celebrated. Can people who don’t know Jesus celebrate Christmas? Of course. But the truth is when people who do not know Jesus celebrate Christmas, the gift is beautifully wrapped but empty. At the end of the day, they open their gift box, it is empty. When they are honest with themselves, they feel the emptiness.
But another three hundred and sixty-five days go by, and we forget quickly. So, we jump into the rat race and begin to celebrate an empty gift. Only to open the gift and discover its emptiness. And that empty gift is not really what God is offering. That empty gift box is the commercialization of Christmas. That is, the replacement of Christmas with every other thing but Jesus, the gift. So, for you to be the real reason for Christmas, which you are, you need to accept the real gift of Christmas, which is Jesus. Have you accepted the real gift of Christmas? Isaiah 9:6 “For a child has been born—for us! the gift of a son—for us” (MSG, emphasis added).
Prayer (hymn): Joy to the world, the Lord is come! Let earth receive her King! Let ev’ry heart prepare Him room, and heav’n and nature sing (x2), and heav’n, and heav’n and nature sing. Amen!
