Go & Look!

1 Kings 18:41&43 “Then Elijah said to Ahab, “Go get something to eat and drink, for I hear a mighty rainstorm coming!” “…Go and look out toward the sea.” The servant went and looked, then… said, “I didn’t see anything…” Seven times Elijah told him to go and look.” (emphasis added)

Get ready because it is a new season. 1 Kings 18:⁴⁴ “The seventh time, the servant came back and said, “I saw a small cloud the size of a man’s fist that was coming in from the sea.” Elijah told the servant, “Go tell King Ahab to get his chariot ready and go home now. If he does not leave now, the rain will stop him.” (ERV, emphasis added). I pray that the rain will not stop you, the rain will not be a hindrance or a problem to you in the Name of Jesus. A couple of things jump out at us from this passage of scripture, and I pray that God will breathe His Word upon us in the Name of Jesus. The first thing is that Elijah said to his servant Go and look. What is going on here? If you are going to look or check, you are building anticipation and expectation.

Yes, God’s Word has been declared, but you need to go and look. You need to actually be expectant and be on the lookout. The connection is that when God is doing something or wants to do something, we are not expectant. Expectation is so powerful that God needs us to go and look, to go and build anticipation. In fact, man from time has been looking forward to rain and expecting rain. Do you know that man has the capacity to smell rain? Many of us are familiar with the smell of rain. Do you know that the scent of rain has a name? It is called Petrichor. Just before it rains, there is that anticipation, and it heightens our expectation, our senses, and we can actually smell rain. Can you smell the rain? Anticipation is a big part of the process – go and look, petrichor is here. Can you smell it?

Moments before a rain event, an “earthy”, pleasant smell known as petrichor permeates the air. So, we see a couple of senses at play here, interwoven together: spiritual senses, physical senses, hearing, seeing, and smelling. When it comes to rain, it all starts with hearing. I hear the sound of the abundance of rain. Then go and look (see), then the smell. And God expects us to build anticipation for His rain.  Psalm 123:^1-2 “I lift my eyes to you, O God, enthroned in heaven. We keep looking to the Lord our God for his mercy, just as servants keep their eyes on their master, as a slave girl watches her mistress for the slightest signal.” (emphasis added).

We are looking to God for the slightest signal, for petrichor, a sound, the sight of rain. We are expectant. God is saying concerning that situation, Go back and look. I know we often get disappointed and discouraged. Elijah’s servant went to and fro several times, looking and not seeing anything. Yet, God is saying Go and look. Check your email, go and look, the offer is there.
