Misconceptions

Acts 1:^6-7 “So when the apostles were with Jesus, they kept asking him, “Lord, has the time come for you to free Israel and restore our kingdom?” He replied, “The Father alone has the authority to set those dates and times, and they are not for you to know.”

Over the next few days, we will be looking at Time. The concept of time is something that we wrestle [struggle] with as human beings because of how we are wired. When something takes time, we do not like it. We mostly want things to be instant hence we have instant noodles, instant meals, instant everything. The concept of time is mostly misunderstood resulting in a lot of misconceptions about time. For instance, people say time is money but that is a misconception. If time were money, we will all be rich, and we will all have at least the same amount of money. Time is not money; it is a misconception. When you are engaged in something that is productive and is of value to humanity, over time it leads to money.

Some people’s time is worth more than others. The richest person in the world is perhaps worth three hundred thousand dollars per hour. But for someone else, one hour may be minus fifty naira. It is not even positive; it is negative per hour. Time is not money; it is the right application of time that creates value and results in money. When we do not have the proper concept of time, we erroneously think that what everybody says is obtainable. Time itself is not money. Another misconception about time is that time heals all wounds and that is not true. If that were true, the fifty-year-old woman who was assaulted as a teenager will not still be feeling the pain at fifty. Time alone does not and cannot heal all wounds. So, what heals wounds? I will say, God over time heals all wounds

Another misconception is I do not have time. This is something you must have heard people say, that is if you do not say it yourself. It is not true. You have time. Some husbands say they do not have time to take their wives out on a date every week. You have time because the truth is you have time for things you make time for. So, you have time to take your wife on a date every week and all the men say ‘Amen’. Do you have ninety minutes to watch a football match? Then you cannot say you do not have time. Some complain about not having time to spend with their children. No, you have the time. It is a misconception for us to say we do not have time. Some say they do not have time to pray. Really? Do not wait till you have a challenge on your hands, because then you will have time to pray. You cannot even afford not to have time to pray.

Eccl.3:¹ “For everything there is a season, a time for every activity under heaven.” (emphasis added). Seasons and times are connected because a season is a specific length of time characterized by the occurrence of certain conditions or events. Every season has a beginning and an ending. Everything has a time it is supposed to happen or a time it should be done. A time to be born and a time to die. There is a time for peace and a time for war. A time to build and a time to break down. There is a time for everything on earth. Please read Eccl.3:1-8.
