Good Tidings
Luke 2:10-11 “And the angel said unto them, Fear not: for, behold, I bring you good tidings of great joy, which shall be to all people. For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Saviour, which is Christ the Lord.” (KJV)
We will be taking a break from our discourse on Faith to focus on God’s Word for us this Christmas. Let’s start by just thanking God for Jesus and for bringing us into sonship.
It is because of Jesus that we can be called children of God. I pray that God will breathe upon us afresh this Christmas season and open our eyes to see as we ought to see. I pray that God will speak to us Himself, and His voice will calm every fear, still every storm, heal the sick, and confirm His presence in all our hearts and homes. What is the real reason for Christmas? Yes, the food is noteworthy but that is not the real reason for Christmas.
The huge theological debate in certain circles that has gone on for years, is that Jesus was not born on the 25th of December. I have read volumes on this matter and guess what? The truth is that Jesus was not born on the 25th of December. Some put the date of His birth in March, and they have their point. Some say it was in September because the shepherds were outside watching the flock by night. And it is too cold in the plains of Bethlehem in December. Some actually put His birth date in May, and we put it in December. Why is it so important that we get the day correct if God did not think it so? When were you born? You think you know your date of birth. What if tomorrow you discover a document that says you were not born on the day you thought you were born? Will it really matter? The key thing is that you were born.
The key thing is that Jesus was born. Jesus was born and there is no disputing that. There are overwhelming historical records. So, whether Jesus was born in March, or in May, or in September, or he was actually born on the 25th of December, the significance remains the same. Jesus was born. Isaiah 9:6 “For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given: and the government shall be upon his shoulder: and his name shall be called Wonderful, Counsellor, The mighty God, The everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace.” (KJV, emphasis added).
And because Jesus is called the Wonderful Counsellor, your life will not lack counsel going forward. Jesus is the Mighty God, therefore, because of His birth the reality of the might and weight of God will be released into your life in the Name of Jesus. Since He is the Everlasting Father, no longer will you feel like an orphan because you have a Father in God. He is the prince of peace, therefore, God will still and quiet every storm in your heart and mind in Jesus Name.
Prayer (hymn): Joy to the world, the Lord is come! Let earth receive her King! Let ev’ry heart prepare Him room, and heav’n and nature sing (x2), and heav’n, and heav’n and nature sing. Amen!
