Posture Of Obedience
‘Then Eli perceived that the Lord had called the boy. Therefore Eli said to Samuel, “Go, lie down; and it shall be, if He calls you, that you must say, ‘Speak, Lord, for Your servant hears.’” 1Sam.3:8-9 [NKJV].
The third thing in enquiring from the Lord is a posture of obedience. When you are asking God a question you must have a posture of obedience. In other words, you must make up your mind to obey whatever He says. In 1 Samuel 3 [please read], God was calling Samuel but he did not know the voice of God so he ran to Eli instead. And Eli taught Samuel something that is absolutely crucial thing in hearing from God. Eli said to Samuel, ‘say, Speak, Lord; for thy servant heareth’ 1Sam.3:9 [KJV]. That is a posture of obedience. In essence what he is saying is speak Lord, I am willing to obey everything You say. When you enter into a relationship with God, sort out your motives, the next thing you need to do is to get into a posture of obedience. What ever He says do, do! Certain events led me to seemingly think that perhaps ministry is not for me and I wanted to go and do a PhD. But I was enquiring of the Lord and He said, “Go back and start a church”. At that time, the last thing I wanted to do was start a church. I don’t think Lagos or Nigeria needs another church. But Lagos and Nigeria need a different kind of church. It was a struggle for me because where was I supposed to start? I had a lot of questions in my heart and guess what? Faces began to pop up in my spirit. God was showing me people’s faces, as if that was not enough, He was also asking, “What exactly do you want to happen to this person and that person?” I was like seeing “seas of people” and I said to the Lord, “Anything You say, I will do”. For many people, when they get hurt in ministry, they won’t want to touch ministry again. But you see God is wiser than you. Before you were born, He knew you. And guess what, the plan He has for you are better than the plans you have for yourself. So the reason why a lot of people are afraid to really enquire of the Lord is because they are afraid of what they will hear. When it comes to seasons where people are required to give, they usually don’t want to ask God what to sow. Some people can’t ask because what if God asks for their perceived “all”? If God is asking you to do something, what do you think He has in mind for you? Think about it. What do you think He has in mind for you? So take a posture of obedience.
Prayer: Father, by faith today I take a posture of obedience to do what You say. I commit to steadfastly grow in obeying You, in Jesus Name.
