Lord, Can I?

‘And David inquired of the Lord, “Shall I pursue this raiding party? Will I overtake them?” “Pursue them,” he answered. “You will certainly overtake them and succeed in the rescue” 1 Sam.30:8 [NIV]

The third thing you do when where you are contradicts where you have been, when what you are seeing is trying to reproach what you have seen in God, when the circumstances around you or your situation are speaking contrary to your experiences, is to ask Him for permission to do the impossible.

Jesus told His disciples to go to the other side and He will join them afterwards. But on their way, a storm arose. About three o’clock in the morning Jesus came toward them, walking on the water. When the disciples saw him walking on the water, they were terrified. In their fear, they cried out, “It’s a ghost!” But Jesus spoke to them at once. “Don’t be afraid,” he said. “Take courage. I am here!” Matt. 14:25-27. They were already in a storm and as if that was not bad enough, now they were seeing double. Is this Jesus or is this a ghost? They were in a place that contradicted the Word of God to them. But pay close attention to what Peter did. Peter took permission from Jesus to do the impossible. When you’ve re-affirmed the Word of God over and over again and you refuse to be offended, the third thing you do is take permission from Jesus to do the impossible. For many of us Jesus has given the permission already, “It is I, come”. For many of us Jesus is giving the permission now, “I am The One, come”. Thomas- doubting Thomas, would probably have been saying, ‘Peter! Water! Peter, you want to step on water? Why don’t you just wait for Jesus to come? This walking on water business is not necessary’. But Peter stepped out in faith and walked on water. You see, there are times when you need to ask Jesus to still the storms and there are times when you need to ask for permission to walk on the storms. There are times when you need to ask the Lord to kill the storm but there are times the storm will be there and the permission you ought to ask for is ‘Lord, can I ride on this storm?’ But many of us are asking-‘ Lord kill the storm’- when He actually wants us to ride on the storm. Many of us are reminding God about how He stilled the storm with just the spoken Word. And God is saying, ‘yes, I remember but this time you are to walk on the storm. It’s not going to be still but you will do the impossible’.

When what you are experiencing is threatening the truth of God’s Word for your life and you are saying, “Is He the one or should we expect another?” Just do these three things; re-affirm the truth of God’s Word, refuse to be offended, and ask for permission to do the impossible. To you that has never known Him; I’m here to tell you that Jesus is The One.

Prayer: Father, lead me by Your Spirit to do the impossible that You will be glorified, in Jesus Name.
