The World
“…don’t you know that friendship with the world means enmity against God? Therefore, anyone who chooses to be a friend of the world becomes an enemy of God” James 4:4 [emphasis added].
What is the world? The Word of God says for God so loved the world that he gave his only begotten son that whosoever believes in him should not perish but have everlasting life [Jn.3:16]. For God so loved the world… and God is saying to us love not the world, if you love the world you become an enemy of God. So what is God saying? When you see the word world in the Bible it means the system of the world and the people in the world. God so loved the people in the world that He died for them but He is saying to you and I do not love the system of the world. “Do not love this world nor the things it offers you, for when you love the world, you do not have the love of the Father in you. For the world offers only a craving for physical pleasure, a craving for [things] we see, and pride in our achievements and possessions. These are not from the Father, but are from this world. And this world is fading away, along with everything that people crave. But anyone who does what pleases God will live forever” 1Jn.2:15 -17. So what does the world have to offer and why is there propensity to love the world? Three things;
- Craving for physical pleasure: other wise known as the Lust of the flesh
- Craving for things we see: Lust of the eyes
- Pride in our achievements and possessions: Pride of life
A lot of people have lost their soul because of these three things. The lust of the flesh; people want physical pleasure so much. The lust of the eyes, the cravings for what we see. The pride of life, people are willing to give anything just to be respected in the society, just to be “title-holders” [M.Sc., B.Sc, PhD]. Is there anything wrong with titles, of course you know that is not what I am saying but it is in the pride of life. The chip on your shoulder based on those things can destroy you but it will not destroy you in Jesus Name.
“The woman was convinced. She saw that the tree was beautiful and its fruit looked delicious, and she wanted the wisdom it would give her. So she took some of the fruit and ate it. Then she gave some to her husband, who was with her, and he ate it, too” Gen.3:6 [emphases added]. Beautiful – lust of the eyes. Delicious – lust of the flesh. Wisdom – pride of life. It is the same thing! The enemy went after Eve and Adam [humanity] with the same thing – with the world. so satan did not offer Eve the fruit, satan offered Eve the world.
Prayer [song]: I love You, Lord. And I lift my voice to worship You. Oh, my soul, rejoice! Take joy my King in what You hear. Let it be a sweet, sweet sound in Your ear. Amen!
