Audience Of One

“Sanctify the Lord of hosts himself; and let him be your fear, and let him be your dread” Isa.8:13 .

The key to being totally free from people pleasing is in understanding that the only person you are capable of totally pleasing is God. You are not capable of pleasing any human being. In fact, you will discover that human beings are “un-pleasable”. Let me illustrate with the story of a popular folk song. It is the story of a father, his son and their donkey on a journey. The father alone was riding on the donkey while his son was walking. The people called him wicked. So the father got off the donkey and let his son ride on the donkey while he walked. People saw them and said the son was disrespectful. So the father and son got on the donkey and when people saw them they said they were wicked to the donkey. So the father and son got off the donkey and all three walked along. When people saw them, they laughed and said they were foolish. The conclusion is, there is nothing they could do to please the people of the world.

The only person you are capable of totally pleasing is God. And the converse is also the case; the only person that is capable of satisfying you is God. Understanding this truth will set you totally free. For those who are married, you will discover that your spouse does not have the capacity to completely please you. In fact, some couples frustrate themselves because the wife is doing everything to satisfy the man and she is discovering very quickly that men are insatiable. And vice versa, the man is doing everything to satisfy the woman but it is not happening. Am I saying you should not try your best to please your spouse? Of course not! But after you have done all you can, just stand. Do all you can and leave the rest to God. Live for the audience of one.

The second fear that prevents us from reaching our destiny is the fear of being authentic. A lot of people are afraid to be who they are. They like to wear masks of other people that they admire. There is nothing wrong with admiring people but be yourself! The only thing you get from being like someone else is a photocopy. And guess what? A photocopy is fake. It is not the original. Even if you get it certified, it is still fake. God created you an original!

Prayer: Father, I pray that my life will be shaped by Your voice and that I will take pride in being authentic, in Jesus Name.
