Pleasing Lyrics!

‘People may be right in their own eyes, but the Lord examines their heart. The Lord is more pleased when we do what is right and just then when we offer Him sacrifices’ Prov.21:2-3

Music is one art form that many of us were surrounded with growing up and it was not necessarily music with Christian lyrics. And so today there is a lot of concern about listening to or dancing to secular music. For me dancing and listening to secular music really is neither here nor there especially if they are just neutral lyrics. ‘Lean on me’ for example does not have Christian lyrics but I consider it neutral music. I know there are people who will fight you for singing songs like that. I would say don’t bother yourself with those kinds of things. The truth is that there are some secular songs that as a Christian you should not be listening to or dancing to. Songs that the lyrics are centered on seduction, hate, sex, killing, just to mention a few of the vices projected through musical lyrics these days. What do you desire? Remember ‘people may be right in their own eyes, but the Lord examines their heart’. There are some topics such as this one that you cannot just put a straight jacket on yet you have to be discerning. ‘You say, “I am allowed to do anything” – but not everything is good for you. You say, “I am allowed to do anything’ – but not everything is beneficial’ 1Cor.10:23. There are some secular songs that are not expedient, don’t listen to or dance to them. Again some are neither here nor there, for example you may be dancing to a Lionel Richie song with your wife. I don’t see anything wrong with that. Some people don’t even dance with their wives; God will forgive you. You cannot say you won’t do it because you never saw your father do it. You are meant to be greater than your father so please dance with your wife.

You have to be even more careful when you attend social functions regardless of whether you love to dance or not. ‘Don’t be concerned for your own good but for the good of others’ 1 Cor.10:24. People are watching you, believe me! They are! And you are the Bible they read. You may have the perfect excuse for your actions but they do not know what your reasons are, all they see are your actions and that’s enough.

Prayer: Father, help me live daily aware that You expect me to look out for the good of others and act accordingly, in Jesus Name.
