Dignity In Labour

2 Thess. 3:12 “In the name of the Lord Jesus Christ, we appeal to people–no, we command them: Settle down and get to work. Earn your own living.”

Do not be passive! It is not a suggestion. It is an instruction. Yes, you have an M.Sc. in Aerodynamics but you have a family to feed. You cannot sit down and fold your hands, waiting for an opening in the industry when you have a family to feed. Yes, just one pay cheque from that desired job will sort out all the accumulated bills but in the meantime, go do something; get to work! The excuse that there are no jobs is not tenable. There is always work to be done. Go and labour for your family; it is the honorable thing to do.

Even if it means doing the so-called “odd jobs” for a season, earn some. You cannot be holding on to your M.Sc. while your children are hungry. The concern of every responsible man is how to feed his family. I hope that is still the case in today’s world. Back in the day when my family was going through a rough patch, I made up my mind to do whatever it takes, even if it meant doing so called “odd-jobs” to feed my family. There is dignity in labour. Sadly, there are men these days that are eating free food and still complaining about one thing or the other. Something is seriously wrong with that.

2 Th. 3:10 “If a man won’t work, he shouldn’t eat.” Take note that the Bible did not say that if a man cannot work. Sometimes, men go through challenging situations where they cannot work. At such times, it is acceptable for the wives to support their husbands. Sometimes, men go through a season that can be likened to a “planting season” of sorts. Wives, please support your husbands at such times. But if the man is sitting, waiting for a grand job and will not do the practical thing and you are feeding him, you are sinning. I know what I am saying is not very popular but it is in the Bible.

I understand that things happen. However, when you are sick in the body for instance, you take God’s Word back to Him and demand for healing, right? In the same way, take His Word back to Him and ask Him to make a way for you and He will, in Jesus Name. Women, you also cannot in the bid to get married, settle. God’s way is that the man should provide.

Prayer: Father, by Your Spirit, I will be all that You have created me to be and my life will bring glory to Your Name, in Jesus Name. Amen!
