Desire

John 7:37-39 “On the last and most important day of the festival, Jesus stood up and shouted, “If you are thirsty, come to me and drink! Have faith in me, and you will have life-giving water flowing from deep inside you, just as the Scriptures say.” Jesus was talking about the Holy Spirit…” (CEV)

Do you want God to lay His hands on you? Do you want your life to be filled with the Holy Spirit? The first of four things is DESIRE. Desire the hand of God and desire to be filled with God. You cannot claim that you want a degree, yet you are not studying or writing the required exams. You cannot claim that becoming an entrepreneur is your dream. But you do not research about what it takes. You are not pursuing that dream. Pastor, he really loves me, he desires me. But you are the only one who is calling, he says he is busy at work. The truth is he does not desire you because you cannot keep a man who desires you away.

When God says He has something in store for you, you have to desire it and pursue it by fasting, praying, and researching. What does the hand of God mean? How can it change your life? One big thing about desire is that you cannot meet someone who desires something and does not ask for it. Asking is actually one of the first steps of pursuit. Matthew 7:7Ask and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you.” (NIV). If you cannot ask, you do not need it. If you cannot seek God’s face, you are not interested. If you cannot knock, you are not ready for the door to be opened.  Jesus expects us to thirst and desire Him. Desire the hand of God to be laid upon us. Desire the Spirit of Life to be released upon us.

Jesus was in Jerusalem for the Feast of the Tabernacles, a three-day festival. On that last day of the festival, the high priest leads a procession of people who are reading Psalms and making melodies. The procession goes from the temple to the pool of Siloam where the high priest will fetch water and lead the procession back to the temple. When he gets to the temple, after reading Isaiah 12:3 (please read), he pours the water signifying two things. God will bring a good harvest and the promise of the Holy Spirit. This action builds thirst, a desire in the people’s hearts for the harvest God will bring, and God’s Spirit poured out like water.

It was on that last day, the most important day of the festival. As the high priest poured out the water and the people were desirous of God, that Jesus stood up and shouted. “If you are thirsty, come to me and drink.” Jesus was saying, this thirst, desire, and hunger you have for other things, I am the one that can fill you. Jesus is the fulfilment of all hopes and dreams. He is the only one who can quench your thirst. The next time you feel that deep desire, that vacuum in the heart of man. Instead of filling it with different things, go to Jesus. Desire to be filled by Him.

Prayer: Father, lay Your hands on me and fill me with Your Holy Spirit, in Jesus Name. Amen!
