Prepared Help
Psalm 46:1 “God is our Refuge and Strength [mighty and impenetrable to temptation], a very present and well-proved help in trouble.” (AMPC)
What do you do when you are confronted with an unfixable problem? What we often do is try to play the “if only” game. If only I was born into this family. If only I had married at this time. If only I had not married this person. If only I just waited. If only this and if only that. It is a broken record. You cannot live your life on “if only”. How do you handle unsolvable riddles, apparently unchangeable circumstances? What do you do? I will tell you what you do. What you do is throw yourself on the sustaining grace of God.
Psalm 46:1 “God is our refuge and strength, always ready to help in times of trouble.” The trouble you brought upon yourself with your own hands, God is ready to help. The one that is unplanned, God is ready to help. The one that is undeserved, God is ready to help. The one that is unrelenting, God is ready to help. He did not qualify the trouble. Whatever trouble, God is a God that delivers from trouble. Psalm 46:2-3&5 “So we will not fear when earthquakes come and the mountains crumble into the sea. Let the oceans roar and foam. Let the mountains tremble as the waters surge! …God dwells in that city; it cannot be destroyed. From the very break of day, God will protect it.” God dwells in your life, family, and in you.
Who is it that says a thing and it comes to pass when the Lord has not decreed it? (Lamentations 3:37). Your only response to trouble and troubling situations is to throw yourself on the sustaining grace of God. So, how do you access the sustaining grace of God? To access God’s sustaining grace, the first thing you do is Call Out For God’s Help. Call out to God for help. “Jesus, thou Son of David, have mercy on me.” (Luke 18:38). As long as you pretend to be self-sufficient, you short-circuit God’s power in your life. In fact, you will soon discover that you are not self-sufficient because there is almost nothing major in your life that you are in control of. You are not in control of the day you were born. You are not in control of the day you die.
You are not in control of so many other things in the middle—who your parents are, who your siblings are. Many of us will not choose our sisters or brothers. We will choose a different combination. But you are not in control of that. You are not in control of so many things of so many things that are major. You are not in control of your genes, how tall you are, how not-so-tall you are, how fine you are, how not-so-fine you are, you are not in control. Shouldn’t that tell you something? Self-reliance is a fool’s vice. Call out for help.
Prayer: Jesus, Thou Son of David, have mercy on me – deliver me from trouble past, present, and future, in the Mighty Name of Jesus. Amen!
