Heart Affairs III

“They entered the house and saw the child with his mother, Mary, and they bowed down and worshiped him. Then they opened their treasure chests and gave him gifts of gold, frankincense, and myrrh” Matt.2:11 [emphasis added]

The second striking thing about true worship from the above quoted scripture is that there can be no worship without total humility. They bowed down and worshipped a baby. You cannot come to God in worship and be full of yourself. Do they know who I am? Really, who are you before God? Nothing! And we have the privilege of worshipping the exalted Christ. They were worshipping the baby and they bowed their knees and they worshipped Him – total humility. When you worship God you cannot have your own chip on your shoulder, you need to let it go. You need to humble yourself because there can be no worship without total humility. You need to humble yourself. The scripture describes them as wise men. But there were not only wise, they were rich men. Poor people cannot give gold. They were obviously influential men because when they came into Jerusalem they asked where ‘is He, that is born King of the Jews’, they had access to the king (herod). But they left all those things and they bowed and they worshipped baby Jesus. Here we are, before the exalted Christ – the resurrected Christ; the Commander of the hosts of heavens and we are posing. What is the basis for the posing? Excuse me? ‘I just did my nails you cannot expect me to wave my hands in the air’. Everyone is lifting up hands signifying adoration of Jesus but what you are really doing is showing off the keys of the only Bentley in the car pack. Nobody cares! When you come to God there can be no worship without total humility.

The third striking this is there can be no worship without sacrificial giving. When it comes to things related to giving, the unschooled and unlearned in spiritual things will quickly say it is about about giving money. It means you are not really paying attention. Remember, you and yours belong to whom you worship. Before these wise men bowed down before the baby, Jesus already owned them, owned the frankincense, the myrrh, the gold and even the things they left back home in the east. So were they giving to Jesus to improve His condition? We heard that you couldn’t afford a decent accommodation so take this to help God. Was that the purpose of their giving? Of course not!. The worship of our God is not about what you can bring to Him. The worship of our God actually starts from what you cannot bring to Him.

Prayer: Holy Spirit, purge me of everything that points to ‘self’ in the things of God so that I may worship with total humility, in Jesus Name.
