At The Roots

1 Cor.2:10 [MSG] “The Spirit, not content to flit around on the surface, dives into the depths of God, and brings out what God planned all along.”

“On the days of prayer meetings, mother was very different. Everything was attended to with urgency. I had become accustomed to it and I understood why. Jesus must be priority.

That part was easy to handle, on those days I would just wake up extra early. But the part that puzzled me most were the meetings. The worship was really beautiful. The preacher seemed to always wait for a particular point in the meeting. When the time comes, he rises up and says the same thing in every meeting, it never changes. “O Lord, clear the cobwebs of our minds!” I tried to talk to mother about it. She said spiders were not pets. She assured me that they only make a mess and we must get rid of them.

So why was the preacher only always cleaning up the mess and not taking out the spider. I knew what I had to do and I made up my mind to help him. Sure enough, the day of the next meeting came and by the clock, at that moment when everyone was solemn, he got up and began to say, “O Lord, clear the cobwebs of our minds!” This is it; enough messing things up spider, now you are going to get it! And at the top of my voice I said, “O Lord, kill the spider!” Jesus has come to kill the spider and not just to clean out the cobwebs. Jesus is not just about dealing with the symptoms. Jesus always deals with the heart of the matter.

Salvation brings far much more than forgiveness. Salvation brings life change. There are many different ways of changing behaviour that have nothing to do with Jesus. But only Christ can take out the disease. There are people that make up their minds and change their behaviour. People have stopped drinking alcohol outside of God. Chain smokers have broken the chain outside of God. There are three main things that lead to behaviour change in people and they are peer pressure, fear, and Christ.

Peer pressure: Human beings like to be in community. There are men that take their families to church on Sundays just because their friends do it and they want to have something to talk about at the gathering of friends on Monday. Nothing more!

Prayer: Holy Spirit of the Living God, take me by the hand and dive me into the depths of God that the life of Christ will envelope me totally, in Jesus Name. Amen!
