Heart Check

“You must not have any other god but me. You must not make for yourself an idol of any kind… You must not bow down to them or worship them, for I the Lord your God, am a jealous God who will not tolerate your affection for any other gods…” Ex.20:3-5.

After reading yesterday’s devotional, a lot of people felt uninvolved because they do not go to shrines, or consult any medium, or engage any false prophet. However, I have said to you repeatedly, your heart is the altar of God. For some of us, the altar you have set up is the altar of fashion. Some people have an altar for fashion; fashion has become their god. There is nothing wrong with fashion. You can be fashionable without having an altar for fashion. A clear example is someone who prays three minutes and dresses up for three hours. Where is your altar? In the wardrobe or in front of the mirror, that is where the altar is. Again, some people are feeling uninvolved. Your altar may not be to fashion but you have raised an altar for money. Strangely some people can sell their siblings to get ahead in life. They are willing to physically sacrifice their sibling to get ahead. That is your god! And guess what, you don’t have to do it physically to have done it [Matt.5:28]. For some other people, it is self. They are so selfish; their god is the god of self. This is the altar they have exalted above the altar of God. For others, it is a status; they will do anything to achieve a certain status. A lady said she had to be ‘MRS’ come rain or sun shine. So that marital status [to be Mrs.] has become your god. You are willing to do whatever it takes to get to that marital status but what you do not know is that people that get into that marital status unprepared or outside of God, run out of that ‘Mrs.’ very quickly. For some, it is the god of ego. Some men are so egoistic, their ego is their god and their wife’s job is to massage and worship that ego. Yes I know we are ego beings; I said we, myself included. That is how we are wired but you need to sacrifice it for God. For some, their altar is pornography. That is what they worship. How do you know that is what you worship? It is what controls you; you are a slave to what controls you. And in addition to all these gods, like the people in Athens, we still have an altar to God.

I want you to check your heart, what god have you raised an altar to? Because we can engage spiritually and pull down, fray the horns of, and destroy those altars. But if you have an altar in your heart to any other besides the living God, invariably He becomes an unknown God. Why? because you cannot have other gods and have Him also on the same pedestal. So that altar raised to God becomes an altar to an unknown God. Unknown to you because once He gets known to you, the other altars get destroyed.

Prayer: Lord, today I unseat any other god that has taken my affection, I repent of this sin against You. Please forgive Me and be enthroned in my heart, in Jesus Name.
