Called vs. Chosen

2Pet.1:10 [KJV, emphasis added] “Wherefore the rather, brethren, give diligence to make your calling and election sure: for if ye do these things, ye shall never fall

What this Scripture is pointing out is that your calling is not sure. It is on shaky ground. The fact that God has a destiny for you does not mean you will fulfill it. I know that this is not popular devotional content and I know it is tough to take in. But if you can open your heart to what God is saying in this season, your life will change drastically.

You are favored but are you worthy? It is possible to be favoured and unworthy. So how do you make your calling sure? Simple; you pay the price. You give diligence. When you do these things, God’s promise is you will never fail. When you do these things, believe me, your life will become a standard that everybody else tries to measure up to. It is possible to be favored and not be worthy. God does not just want you to be favored; He wants you to be favoured and worthy.

Jesus communicates these truths with a brilliant story in Matthew 22 [please read]. A certain king [representing God] threw a party but all the people he invited gave excuses – I just married a wife, I just bought oxen, I just bought a field. So the king threw open the invitation to everybody on the streets, “my party will be attended, my house will be full”.

Do you think the king was trying to save himself from reproach? Matt.22:11 But when the king came in to meet the guests, he noticed a man who wasn’t wearing the proper clothes for a wedding. 12 ‘Friend,’ he asked, ‘how is it that you are here without wedding clothes?’ But the man had no reply. The man was probably thinking, “Why am I here without clothes? Are you not the one that begged me to come so your party won’t be a flop? Am I not doing you a favor by being here?’ But hear what the king said, Matt.22:13 Then the king said to his aides, ‘Bind his hands and feet and throw him into the outer darkness, where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.’ 14 “For many are called, but few are chosen.” Your call is a function of favour but being chosen is a function of being worthy. If you are called, it is because you are favored. But if you are chosen, it will be because you are worthy.

Prayer: Lord Jesus, help me to give diligence to make my calling and election sure and as You have promised, let failure be far from me, in Jesus Name. Amen!
