Stolen Bread

Prov.20:17Stolen bread tastes sweet, but it turns to gravel in the mouth[with emphasis]

There are certain things that you would naturally be drawn to but are not good for you. There are certain kinds of food that you really enjoy but are actually not good for you. In fact, some can actually kill you. Sugar for instance, no matter how much of a sweet tooth you have, the fact is that sugar can kill you. So the fact that it tastes good to you does not mean that it is good for you. The fact that sex is enjoyable does not mean it is good for you outside of God. Some people will argue that why did God make it so good. Again I say, the fact that it tastes good does not mean that it is good for you.

There are boundaries with food and there are also boundaries with sex. If you want to have children, there are certain kinds of food you just stay away from because they are just not good for you. If you want to be active, there are certain kinds of food you have to stay away from. And there are certain foods you have to take in because they are good for you. There are boundaries; how it tastes does not determine if it is safe. This also applies to sex; how good it is does not determine if it is safe.

I really do love God and how real He is with these things. The Bible says in Prov.20:17Stolen bread tastes sweet, but it turns to gravel in the mouth”. God acknowledges the fact that stolen bread is sweet. Sleeping with another person’s spouse appears to be sweet, but that sweetness very quickly turns to gravel in the mouth. Imagine taking the first few bites on a loaf of bread and savoring the sweetness and then suddenly you bite it and it is gravel. The person that happens to, will most likely lose all his or her teeth. I never just gloss over God’s Word; I make it personal and that helps me appreciate, understand and apply it.

The third thing we must know about sex is that it is not enough. As enjoyable as sex can be and it is, sex cannot give total satisfaction and meaning to life. Sex is incapable of doing that. No human being is capable of satisfying you; it is not possible. In fact personally, the times that I have been unhappy in my marriage are the times that I subconsciously expected my wife to fill my tank. Only God can fill my tank.

Prayer: Lord Jesus, help me not to take anything that You have not given me, in Jesus Name. Amen!
