Contrite Heart
2 Cor. 7:10 “For godly sorrow produces repentance leading to salvation, not to be regretted; but the sorrow of the world produces death” [NKJV].
David says in Ps.51:17 “The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit, A broken and a contrite heart—These, O God, You will not despise.” The reason why people are able to go back to their sin is because they do not experience that contriteness of heart. It is that contriteness that usually leads to repentance and a total turn around. When people get to the point where they really see sin for what it is and they experience that sorrow, then repentance happens. Otherwise it is just confession.
As this year comes to an end, we need to say, Lord I have made some mistakes this year, have mercy upon me. We need to go on our knees and say, “Lord, I kneel in repentance. I am sorry. I repent today of this transgression”. And the truth is that when we kneel before Christ, we can stand before anyone and anything. Kneeling before Christ empowers you and I to stand before anything and anyone because you are free. You can face any demon, any power and any spirit. No threat can work on you because you are free in Christ indeed.
When you kneel before God, you do not bow to any idol. I am a student of church history from Pentecost till date. I like to know what has happened in the different countries, how churches rise and fall, everything. And what is happening in Nigeria is not new. It has happened before in Rome. The first generation of Christians in this nation, that is the indigenous Christians in this nation, their task was to confront idols. So the line was drawn – it is either you are with Christ or you are not with Christ. And people that were saved, were saved and were turning their backs on the old ways and on the idols.
What we have today is like a polytheistic setting. Where people still want to go to a shrine and still want to come to church. And we have priests saying it is fine. And there are prayer houses with people who are masquerading as men of God. The truth is what such people want is a god that they can control and not a God that is in control of them.
Prayer: Holy Spirit, help me see my rebellion as rebellion and let it work godly sorrow in me unto true repentance, in Jesus Name. Amen!
