Seed Size
Matt.17:20 “…I tell you the truth, if you have faith as small as a mustard seed, you can say to this mountain, ‘Move from here to there’ and it will move. Nothing will be impossible for you.” (NIV)
2 Cor.3:5 “Not that we are adequate in ourselves so as to consider anything as having come from ourselves, but our adequacy is from God.” (NASB, emphasis added). Our adequacy is from God, our adequacy is not from us. It is not ‘God can move mountains’, it is ‘God can make me adequate to move the mountains He wants moved in my life’. Boom! God can make you adequate regardless of whether you see yourself as a big dreamer or no dreamer. Going through this myself, I wrote down two things – two ridiculous dreams. But I am comfortable with ridiculous dreams, in fact that is my forte, my turf. Did you write down the big dream(s) that came to mind? I want to encourage you to write them down. If you can write down fifty things, it is fine but I kind of work with the fewer the better. From the list of dreams that you wrote down some days ago or you will write down, if there were no limits, what can you attempt for God? The first thing that Jesus is teaching us is, if we are going to move mountains, we have to THINK BIG.
The second thing from our anchor scripture is, you have to START SMALL. Think big – start small is almost cliché. However, if it will make us remember how to move mountains then we will use it. You have to start small – how? Matt.17:20 “…I tell you the truth, if you have faith as small as a mustard seed….” (NIV). The challenge with the disciples then and with many of us today is that we look at the mountain that is before us and we want to have enough faith to move the mountain. And because the mountain is big, we are trying to psych ourselves. For a lot of people, what they call developing their faith is more or less psyching themselves. That is not faith. People are looking for ways to pump up enough faith that will matchup to the mountain. But Jesus is saying, ‘No, that is not how to move mountains.’
If you want to move mountains, you must stop looking at the mountains and trying to measure your faith up to the mountain. Jesus is saying, you look at the mustard seed, the smallest seed, and try to have faith as small as the mustard seed then the mountain will move. So, it means that when you can get the mountain sized faith to move your ‘mountain’, then who takes the credit? You and your faith. In fact, some people put their faith in their faith. But our faith is not in our faith, our faith is in our God. But if your faith is like the mustard seed, and the mountain as huge as it is moves, who takes the credit? Even you would admit that your faith is mustard seed sized, but the mountain will move anyway because that is what is required to move the mountain. We lose the mustard seed faith because we are trying to acquire the mountain sized faith. But what is required is not a mountain sized faith. What is required to move the mountain sized problem is a mustard seed faith. It is not about how big your faith is, it is about how big your God is.
Prayer [song]: Be magnified, O Lord. You are highly exalted. And there is nothing You can’t do. O Lord, my eyes are on You. Be magnified, O Lord, be magnified. Amen!
