Ephphatha!
Mark 7:35 “At once the man’s ears opened and he could hear perfectly, and his tongue was untied and he began to speak normally.” (TPT)
Over the next few days in our journey to restoration, we will be focusing on restoring sound. God’s Word to us this season is restoration, and so shall it be in the Mighty Name of Jesus. The Bible passage we will be learning from is Mark 7:31-32 “Then Jesus left the vicinity of Tyre and went through Sidon, down to the Sea of Galilee and into the region of the Decapolis. There some people brought to him a man who was deaf and could hardly talk, and they begged Jesus to place his hand on him.” (NIV). So, this man had sound shut out from his life completely. Not only couldn’t he receive sound, but he could also not make sound.
He could not communicate; he could not talk. Not only couldn’t he hear what others were saying, but he could not even express what he wanted to say audibly. His sound was cut off. For everyone whose sound has been cut off, the sound will be restored today in the Name of Jesus. Mark 7:33 “After he took him aside, away from the crowd, Jesus put his fingers into the man’s ears. Then he spit and touched the man’s tongue.” (NIV). This passage has some very interesting parallels with the one for restoring sight. In this story, Jesus took this man away from the crowd. In the other one, He just took him out of the village, so the crowd could still have followed. They probably had heard that this Jesus spits on people’s eyes.
That is why they said, “Lay your hands on him”. In other words, just Your hand, do not spit on him. But Jesus spat and touched the man’s tongue with His sputum. Now this man was deaf and dumb, but he could see. Remember, the other man could not see, but he could hear. So he heard Jesus spitting and probably was wondering, is this Jesus actually spitting? He couldn’t see, but this man could see; he saw Jesus spitting on His fingers. And while he was wondering what Jesus was going to do with it, Jesus put His fingers on the man’s tongue.
Mark 7:34-35 “He looked up to heaven and with a deep sigh said to him, “Ephphatha!” (which means “Be opened!”). At this, the man’s ears were opened, his tongue was loosened and he began to speak plainly.” (NIV). In the Name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, we speak to every deaf ear and every mute tongue, be opened. Ephphatha! Mark 7:36 “Jesus commanded them not to tell anyone. But the more he did so, the more they kept talking about it.” (NIV). I pray in the Name of Jesus that God will do a work in your life that you will not be able to cover. You may try, but it will be impossible for you to cover it in Jesus Name.
Prayer: Father, my ears will hear of Your goodness and my mouth will testify, in Jesus Name. Amen!
