Cornerstones of Leadership
Not so with you. Instead, whoever wants to become great among you must be your servant, and whoever wants to be first must be your slave Matt.20:26-27
The cornerstones of leadership are the cornerstones of excellence applied. Jesus said, whoever must be a leader must first of all be a servant. A great leader must be competent, sacrificial and devoted.
Competence: David acquired the skills he needed to rule a nation while he was a tending sheep on the field [Prov.22:29]. While no one was watching, David sharpened his skill and execution. You must get the skills required for leadership and it is God alone who determines where your training field will be. Do not disdain what you perceive to be a minimal Job. Jesus made the above statement because He knew that if you are incapable of following, you will be incapable of leading.
Sacrifice: You have to give up so you can go up. As a leader you have to be prepared to sacrifice your time in order to put things in place. Jesus understood this very well, that leading is serving ‘the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give His life as a ransom for many’. There is a sacrifice that is waiting for you that no one else can make for you. As a leader, God has shown you what you have to do so stop playing games with Him. God will not change laws to make sacrificing convenient for you. Make the sacrifice!
Devotion: The difference between King Saul and King David was clearly their devotion to God. It is your walk with God that guarantees the impact of your leadership and your eternity. Remember that as a king, you answer to the King of kings. When it is all said and done the only thing that will endure is your relationship with Jesus. You can’t be a successful leader if you cannot hear God.
Thought: Until you get to a place where the only thing that matters is God then you never really will find Him.
Prayer: Father, help me by Your Spirit to access the qualities of leadership taught by my Lord Jesus Christ and to lead like Jesus. Lead me by Your Spirit to serve your people as I ought.
