Appraise Yourself

Gal.6:4 (Philips) “Let everyone learn to assess properly the value of his own work.  Then he can be rightly proud when he has done something worth doing, without depending on the approval of others” [with emphasis]

Col.3:24 (GN)“… Remember that the Lord will reward you… For Christ is the real Master you serve” [with emphasis]. The only person that needs to appreciate your work is God. And He will appreciate it if it is worthy of appreciation. For some people, saying that God will reward them is not necessarily a blessing because they have not worked for the Lord. They have done eye service, worked for themselves, and worked to get ahead of their colleagues. When the time for God’s reward comes, what will the reward be? If this is what the story of your work has been up until today, then, it is time to realign your life. God is taking note.

These three perspectives: you work for the Lord, work like the Lord and expect your reward from God, will make any job enjoyable. However, sometimes we still need to change jobs because of the sweet spot. And I will explain while using the illustration of the tennis racket. The tennis racket also has a sweet spot.  If you hit the ball on the frame of the racket even though the ball will move, it will not move optimally. If in a game all you do is hit the ball with the frame, you will get frustrated. But if I can get the sweet spot every time, the ball will keep going at optimal speed.

Similarly, in our jobs, our lives or in our alignment, we may  just be hitting the frame and not hitting the sweet spot. Finding the right place to work is not all about job search strategies, how to submit your resume and how to network. Yes, these things are actually very important however, before you even begin to do all that, to find the right place to intersect with your calling and create the sweet spot, you need to do a couple of evaluations and introspection.

You need to do so by evaluating your past work. A lot of people are not introspective; people just want to move on to the next thing. And before you know it, you are sixty and worrying about pension – that is the rat race. God wants us to be deliberate and to be people of thought. God wants us to introspect and to evaluate our past work life.

Prayer: Lord God, I pray that my work will be worthy of Your appreciation and reward. Help me to always stop to evaluate the weight of my actions, in Jesus Name. Amen!
