Habits!

Those who live only to satisfy their own sinful nature will harvest decay and death from that sinful nature. But those who live to please the Spirit will harvest everlasting life from the Spirit. Gal.6:8

Wikipedia.org defines habits as ‘routines of behavior that are repeated regularly and tend to occur subconsciously’. Research states that it takes a normal human being 28 days to form a habit. A bad habit is a negative behavioral pattern that has been developed over time. Anything, besides worshiping God that you do not have control over in your life is dangerous. Once it becomes a compulsion, it is potentially destructive. Most people do not realize it but bad habits are slow, steady and consistent destroyers. However, because of the new season God is about to bring you into today, it is important that you shut the door to bad habits. Bad habits are like a leaking tap, wasting away people’s lives. Once, I was preaching to a friend plus trying to get him to drop the habit of smoking because it is potentially destructive. His defense was that no one wants to die quickly and everyone dies anyway. He was somewhere making another wrong choice, when he dropped dead, because he had damaged his lungs. The Bible tells us that God knows every one of us even before we are formed in our mother’s wombs. His bad habits led to poor choices that ended his life before he could discover the beauty God had planned. What bad habit do you need to plug today? Is it drinking alcohol, it is destroying your liver? And the the Bible says you cannot be filled with the Holy Spirit and with wine at the same time. Are you in bed with someone that is not your spouse? The Bible says, ‘will a man take fire in his bosom and not be burnt? Are you hooked on pornography because you feel it’s not hurting anyone? By the time the rewards come it will be damaging. You need to shut the door to bad habits and focus on God for your next level.

Thought: Lay down every questionable habit before God’s altar by the power of the Holy Spirit.

Prayer: Father, I offer my life to you. All that I am and will ever be I lay down today at Your altar.

  1. I think we should be conscious of what we do when we think no one is watching, there are some bad habits that are not really common but very dangerous

  2. I totally agree with you Oppey.

This one got me thinking though “Once it becomes a compulsion, it is potentially destructive.” Some things we consider little are actually compulsive and God does not like it. it might be placing TV above your quiet time or taking one spoon too many. God watches oh! Amazing

  3. Hmm…one spoon too many. Nice one Debbie!
