1Jn.1:1 “We proclaim to you the one who existed from the beginning, whom we have heard and seen. We saw him with our own eyes and touched him with our own hands. He is the Word of life.” (emphasis added).

1 Cor.12:4-5 “There are different kinds of spiritual gifts, but the same Spirit is the source of them all. There are different kinds of service, but we serve the same Lord.” (emphasis added)
Discerning of spirits means recognizing the source of a manifestation. Why is this important? It is because not everything spiritual is from the Holy Spirit. If someone knows your qualifications [you have BSE, MSE, Ph.D., PhD+, PhD++], does it mean the person knows you? He or she may know what you are capable of – faster than Usain Bolt, stronger than Hulk, can defeat Mohammed Ali. Those are just your attributes but that is not your person. Jn.14:27 “I am leaving you with a gift–peace of mind and heart. And the peace I give is a gift the world cannot give. So don’t be troubled or afraid” (emphasis added).
