Simplify I

Prov.15:16 (MSG) “A simple life in the Fear-of-God is better than a rich life with a ton of headaches.”

Our first lesson in simplicity is from Luke 2:7 (please read). What lesson can you learn from the life of Jesus from this passage? The first and obvious lesson here is, some people are actually wearing their future as far as clothing is concerned. If the money spent on all those clothes that are just sitting in the closet had been invested, it would have doubled. Again, Jesus was God Himself, He could have chosen to be born in any palace, but He opted for the simplest place. Even from birth Jesus chose to be simple. Our second lesson in simplicity is from John 12:12–15 (please read). Throughout Jesus’ life, apart from when the wise men visited Him at birth, these events were at the peak of Jesus being celebrated on earth. And this was just a few days before His crucifixion. What lesson in simplicity is Jesus teaching us here? In comparison to donkeys, horses are more prestigious. But scripture clearly states that Jesus chose a donkey! Some people will argue that Jesus still chose to ride on a donkey as opposed to walking with His bare feet. If only you knew who He was (and still is) and all the other acts of reverence He did not mandate. For instance, He did not mandate the people to sing Hosanna! He did not mandate the people lay down palm fronds and their clothing!

The only choice Jesus made was what to be ridden on and He did not choose a horse, He chose a donkey. He chose to be simple. From birth till His death, when He had to choose, Jesus chose the path of simplicity. This is not to say there is anything wrong with riding on horses. There are chariots of fire (horses) in heaven, where He was going. Jesus was just giving us examples of how to declutter our lives here on earth. Prayer:  Holy Spirit, show me daily how to choose simplicity so that I will live a simple life in the fear of God all the days of my life, in Jesus Name. Amen!
